Notice that your plastic chair is having that chalky look? That is because of oxidation.

What is oxidation on a plastic chair?

Oxidation on a plastic chair is common; it causes your chair to lose its original aesthetics. Oxidation happens when plastic chairs are frequently exposed to the air, rain, and sunlight. Since the plastic chairs contain chemicals that are reactive to oxygen that is found in the air, the rain or water, and the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, it causes the plastic chair to lose its life.

One of the most affected plastic chairs is the lawn chairs. These chairs are frequently exposed not only to the above-mentioned contributing factors but also to bird droppings, animal scratches, dust, and dirt; thus, contributing to the chair’s degradation.

What to do?

There are ways to keep your chairs from degrading, which includes the following:

  • Always keep your outdoor chairs covered. There are outdoor chair covers that you can purchase; these may include:
  • Plastic chair cloth covers
  • Large outdoor umbrella
  • Position your plastic lawn furniture out from direct sun; this means, look for a spot at your lawn area where your furniture does not get direct or extreme heat from the sunlight.
  • Always keep your plastic lawn furniture clean. Clean your outdoor furniture with soap and water at least twice a month.

What if your outdoor chairs look dull already because of oxidation?

There are several ways you can remove oxidation from the plastic chair, which includes the following:

Step one: Using a mild detergent that is mixed with water, wash away all the obvious dirt. When washing away the dirt, do not use tough scrubs, it may cause irreversible scratches which may cause bigger problems; instead, use a sponge.

Step two: Eliminate the molds present using a water solution with vinegar. Here’s what you need to get to make a water solution:

  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 4 cups of warm water
  • A spray bottle

Remember that for every ¼ cup of white vinegar, you should mix it with 4 cups of water.

When you are done making the solution, place it inside the spray bottle; spray the water solution all over the chair, especially at the area where there is a mold formation. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, rinse the chair with clean water and dry it with clean and dry cloth cleaner.

Step three: Remove obvious stains

If you find a stain on the plastic chair, you have to remove it as soon as possible to prevent it from causing additional problems. Stains on the plastic chair can be a sign of plastic degradation.

To remove the stain, try using baking soda and bleach. Here is how:

  • First, mix a cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of bleach; this will create a paste-like wax.
  • Use a brush or a sponge to clean the stain. Leave the solution on the stain for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse the solution with clean water and dry it with a clean cloth.

Final Thoughts

Oxidation on a plastic chair is inevitable, but you can extend the chair’s life span as long as you keep your outdoor furniture well-maintained.
